A Walk and a Sailing Myth

The small ferry sailing around Frederiksborg Castle resembles undeniably a little boat from Legoland.

However, many people are having a joyous day on the lake with a different view to the castle

Recently I heard on the radio that the little boat is a rebuilt lifeboat from one of the most famous vessels in Danish history:

The ship Jutlandia, a floating hospital, that went on three expeditions from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War.

That changed completely my perspective on the small ferry, until yesterday, when I did some research.

The shipping company tells the story on their website. The ferry has sailed the lake since 1952, and the story about the lifeboat is so popular that it has almost turned into a truth. Some myths are worth saving 🙂

Note

You can take a wonderful walk around the lake and through the Baroque garden or you can continue towards Gribskov and wilderness.

The Day After…

When the day grew dark, a rosy glow coloured the sky. A subdued but beautiful fireworks.

Ancient Roads In Winter

Do you recognise the ambience, the mood in the landscape. I can almost smell the snow. I love that smell.

Danish painter Anders Andersen-Lundby (1841–1923)

Anders Andersen-Lundby found many motives in Bavaria where he lived with his family from 1876 until his dead in 1923. He was known for his beautiful snow landscapes.

I always think of Harrevad Bridge when I see Winter Landscape with a Horse-drawn Cart. Most of all because of the history which is attached to the bridge.

Harrevad Bridge, Harrevad Bro, Hareskoven

Harrevad Bridge is part of an ancient ford

Through centuries, travellers crossed the ford at Harrevad Bridge. Down towards the bridge exist several sunken ancient roads caused by people who have walked with their ox and horse-drawn carts in all kind of weather.

I had a wonderful winter walk in Hareskoven years back when snow added a beautiful mood to the landscape. It was only just that I got out of the forest before it got dark, very dark – no moon 🥴🙂

A Historic Cultural Venue

Today Sophienholm is considered one of the leading representatives of Danish salon life in the 19th century.

The Magical Power of Snow

The hoarse cries of a raven put me in adventure mood. A few kilometres further on, only the creaking of snow under my shoes breaks the silence, This is an amazing day after the blizzard and the light makes my heart sing.
I’m grateful for being alive.

Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,
Arrives the snow, and, driving o’er the fields,
Seems nowhere to alight: the withered air
Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,
And veils the farm-house at the garden’s end.
The sled and traveler stopped, the courier’s feet
Delayed, all friends shut out, and housemates sit
Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed
In a tumultuous privacy of storm.

Elsinore and Kronborg Castle

The old town of Elsinore is like stepping into a fairy tale. One sunny day we went for a stroll from the harbour to Kronborg Castle. Old medieval buildings lure with history, interesting facts and legends. Elsinore and Kronborg Castle always entice with a tale.

Is this the top of the tower, Mom?

Is this the top of the tower, Mom? The boy stepped out into the sunlight as the first of a small English family. He looked eagerly over the red-tiled roofs of Copenhagen, with the beautiful verdigris copper spires and towers.
I can take a photo he said and soon the little group established themselves in front of a lovely boy with a camera.

They chose the right day to enjoy the view from Rundetårn. There is an obvious reason to consider the other towers in Copenhagen, when standing at the top of Rundetårn.

The view is spectacular and so is the sight of the Saviour’s Church. I told the family about the famous spiral ramp on the outside of the tower and how it inspired Jules Verne in his book, A trip to the bowels of the earth.
But I forgot to tell them about the English Bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807 and how the soldiers chose to aim after the spires in Copenhagen. Luckily the Saviour’s Church survived but Our Lady Church, Vor Frue Kirke, burned down and so did many old buildings in the centre of the city.

The Park

Sophienholm is an old country house at Bagsvaerd Lake, built-in 1768-69. Today, the buildings give room for the art museum Sophienholm.
The park is a very popular excursion and makes up a small part of a spectacular greenery.

When Art and Nature Merge

I’m walking in steep hills among ancient trees in an icy cold rain. I put my course towards the Norwegian Hut.
High above the lake lies the little wooden house as a part of an artistic installation, Eremitagen og bjergbestigersken.
In former time at the same place was a house where poets could sit and write.
In 1993, when the art work was complete, an author could receive the key to the house.
In the middle of the wood with a view over the water artists can meditate or write inspired by nature and tranquillity.
A pale concrete foundation under the house is the starting point for the work of art. The concrete protrusion faces Norway. Thus the name the Norwegian House.

My walk continue towards Sophienholm with its associated buildings and greenhouse. Today I stick to the humble buildings if one might call the Cobra Room for humble.

Some of the most outstanding artists in Denmark are represented at Sophienholm.

God tur i solen i morgen ❤
