It was a day that included all weather conditions. The day started cloudy and in dry weather. It blew up, and a few holes in the cloud cover revealed a blue sky, so infinitely beautiful. But when I looked over my shoulder, dark clouds were towering, and soon the snow was gathering around us, painting the ground white. When we came out of the forest we caught sight of this: The pond with two young swans and the wonderful sky reflecting on the surface.
What is the daylight like in Denmark in December? Our average sunshine hours is 1.28 per day. On December 21, the sun sets at 15.37 and it is DARK night at 18.00. On cloudy days, the lunch break is experienced as twilight. But when the snow covers the landscape and the sun shines –
The last week has been absolutely amazing! PS I know we’ve made it to January 😅
What an awesome winter weather. It all started with a blizzard in Jutland, and eventually we got snow in Copenhagen and North Zealand as well. Completely unreal winter weather where people were stuck in traffic for many hours. It doesn’t happen that often in Denmark anymore.
I had to quote William Shakespeare for Blow Blow You Winter Wind ❤️😊
..Thy tooth is not so keen, Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude…
I have always loved the twilight, ever since I was a little girl. When the sun sets in winter and the clouds turn red. When landscapes are under the spell of snow, the adventure begins. Even life in the streets seems enchanted.

A wildly beautiful place in Tafjordfjella, Norway!
Tordsvatnet in Tafjordfjella, Norway!
On a mountain hike in Norway, we sat one evening in the mountain cabin Torsbu, and a hiker told us this story:
For the last 25 years, he has spent a week of his holiday in the mountains. He hikes alone, enjoying the silence of nature. But one year, he is a bit late.
Autumn is coming to an end, and there are very few people in the mountains and at the cabins.
After several days of hiking without encountering a single person, he begins to long intensely for company. Now his hope is that there will be people at the next mountain cabin.
After many hours of walking, the dark silhouette of the cabin appears on the landscape.
On our way to Pyttbua i Tafjordfjella
The large mountain cabin, Pyttbua is empty, dark, and cold. He hurries to light a fire in the fireplace and a couple of candles. This lessens the disappointment, and after the meal his mood becomes better.
He goes out of the mountain cabin and to the toilet outside. It is while he is sits there that he hears people!
Talking and laughter, the sound of footsteps, and a door slamming.
Encouraged by the thought of company, he finishes quickly and rushes over to the cabin.
But wait! The hall is empty and the silence is deafening. He stands there and listens, but there is no sound other than his own quick breathing. He shouts: Hello! – no reaction. Just deep silence –
Afterward, he goes through the entire cabin without finding anyone, and he admits that it gives him a very restless night, trying to convince himself that his imagination has played a trick on him.
So! Were they ghosts? You’d better make your own judgement 😊
Journalist, author and editor Eivind Eidslott has written this lovely piece of poetry: Når Sola Snur.
When the Sun Turns, is inspired by the Norwegian Mountain Rules and winter solstice. Translation from Norwegian to English by me:
There is no shame in turning around Turn around in time We all want to return home
That is why we turn in gale, in snow fog, in doubt. We turn in storm, in hail showers, in fog.
We turn in good weather, in stormy weather, in all kinds of weather. We turn around before dark, and hunger and cold. We go back before the body is empty, before the feet are worn out, before the mood runs out. We all want to return home
But turn now, Turn your head and see: Now the sun is turning, ouch! There is no shame in that. It’s got a new position of trust up there. The biggest task, The winter solstice. When the Sun Turns by Eivind Eidslott
Yesterday was the shortest day of the year and the sun was shining. The light of Winter Solstice. The sun is turning ❤️
