  1. She is such a beautiful ship. I would have loved to work on building her even though I’m not a seafarer. I shall mark the date in my diary & hopefully there’ll be something on the news, if I can find her. Will you be at the launch? Taking photos? Would you not love to sail on her? ⛵️

    • Thank you so much for your comment, Ashley!! Yes, it would be fantastic to sail along on a short trip, with moderate waves 🤢🤣🤣
When the sail is set: The Sea Stallion from Glendalough
I was present at the welcome of the Sea Stallion after the journey from Ireland. It was a wonderfully beautiful day and the skipper made this speech:

Before the Sea Stallion departed for Dublin, Carsten Hvid, also called Skipper, gave a speech based on The Hobbit, Tolkien’s adventure, which he was reading to his children. On his return from Dublin, Skipper picked up the thread where he left off.

“I felt like a hobbit who was not much for adventure, who would rather sit in his cozy cave and have things be as they always were, and that adventure was not for a proper hobbit. But then a wizard with long, white hair – or in this case a witch – came and told me to go on the adventure of my life, and suddenly, like in a real adventure, we were off, said Carsten Hvid.

Together with the very diverse, hand-picked crew, he has written a multitude of pages in his adventure book, and this is where he drew inspiration for the speech.

“Do you remember the first time we sailed on the Kattegat? And do you remember when, a few years ago, we were on our way to Norway and Dublin in the pouring rain? Do you remember Orkney? The Scottish music in the Hebrides? Islay and the whiskey distilleries? The North Channel, where everything we had learned was put to the test? Do you remember the reception at Port Oriel, the first port in Ireland? Do you remember the staggering reception in Dublin? The National Museum? The long winter far away from the ship? Do you remember the departure from Dublin? The nice harbourmasters? Do you remember the Celtic Sea, where even Alexander was completely quiet? Do you remember Portsmouth? The White Cliffs of Dover in the morning light? Do you remember when we finally left for Holland? Do you remember the anchor? The entrance to Thyborøn canal? The seed men in Kongsøre? Do you remember the trip down through the fjord? And does anyone even remember the party yesterday? – I probably thought so, said Carsten Hvid.

Do you remember the oatmeal? Seasick? Cable One and the guys from there? Tides? The wind? The waves? Now we are home and have submitted our contribution to this fantastic project. We have felt welcome everywhere. And dear Tinna. You are my youth sorceress. You make wonderful things happen. Thank you for coming to our caves, and pushing us all over the abyss, onto this journey. Thank you for the courage you have shown, and you should know that if you call – we will come again! promised Skipper White, ending with a warning that this journey would mark the returning hobbits forever.

In the future, you will see them talking softly and in agreement about things difficult for outsiders to understand because they have got something together for the rest of their lives.

We, spectators, stood with a lump in our throats and understood very well what fantastic experiences these hobbits had had. It was with the tremors that we had followed on the podcast, sent from the ship. So when seasickness plagued, darkness fell, and the Sea Stallion disappeared in great wave valleys, it was understood that it takes a special character to mingle with hobbits.

      • My goodness, Hanna, I have a lump in my throat after reading your answer! I would have been happy to help with painting her, even gathering up any wood shavings & dust from the making of her. Did you visit one of my last posts: Occasional Furniture.

The 1st adult book I ever read aged 11 or 12 was Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki Expedition. Launching from the coast of Chile & picking up the Humboldt Current…..all on a raft of balsa tree trunks tied together with string! I’m no adventurer but I admire those brave souls who set off into the unknown. 🤗🙋‍♂️

      • Thanks for your lovely comment, Ashley. Yes, I read your post about the Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki Expedition. You made an excellent first book choice 🎁😊
I immersed myself in Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Michell Ransome, and shortly after The Fiddler of Selma Lagerlöf and other stories by the same Swedish author.

  2. Yes, it must be an adventure to travel on the wonderfully beautiful and exciting ship!

    • Thanks for comment!! The original vessel was built in the vicinity of Dublin around 1042, using oak from Glendalough in County Wicklow, Ireland, hence the ship’s name. The reconstruction was built in Denmark at the shipyard of the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde between 2000 and 2004 and is used for historical research purposes.
      I love that ship 😍🙂
